Pipeline Project- Snow White and Rose Red #2

SO! Beth Duboe's Pipeline Project was chosen. Matt Schafer and I are Co- Art Directors on the project.

The group of about 15 people will be creating a trailer for the Grimm's Fairytale, "Snow White and Rose Red." Art Directors are responsible for the look and feel of a production basically. Since Matt and I will be working as a team on this project, we're both doing some initial sketches and showing our different ideas of what the production will look like.

I started out by collecting images on pinboard on Pinterest. When I was picking the different images, I tried to keep in mind both a modern take and a traditional take to the piece.

I did a color palette and inspirational board of sorts.

I also started to create a rough list of some props and costume items we may need:

Pipeline Project Proposal- Moondance

I’m introducing my pipeline project proposal. 5 weeks, that’s how much time will be devoted to this project. Those 5 weeks are going to happen no matter what. I’d like to spend those 5 weeks making something that matters. Something of importance.

That is why I propose a short film.  My inspiration came from when I was listening to “Moondance” by Van Morrison and I loved the idea of a couple dancing in the moonlight. The song has a morose feeling of lost love to it, which led me to the tragic love story, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

I’m hoping to play up on everyone’s strengths, talents, and interests. I personally am interested in production design. There will be a little something for everyone, some animation, stop motion, fantastic costumes and makeup, set designs, story, really anything. This film is going to be big and fantastic. It will be a huge conglomeration of artistic minds.

The story:

A happy couple are soon torn apart by the girl’s untimely death. The guy is left feeling depressed and he feels life just cannot go on without her. He goes to his local bar and drinks his feelings his thoughts go to a darker place so he decides to end his life by overdosing on medications. He goes into a dreamlike stupor and this begins the fantastical part of the story. He enters a new world, it could be heaven or not, everything is fantastic and magical. The girl is with him once again and they’re dressed in elaborate costumes and almost looking otherworldly, think Midsummer’s Night Dream here. They have a blast for one last time; the dream should be euphoric feeling. Suddenly he is drawn away from this dream world and back into reality. This scene could have a sweet transition from the girl to a new girl at a hospital or an ambulance. He is awoken to a chaotic scene vibrant with life now he has to face the bitter reality of living without her and finding happiness again.

The dream state is where things can pretty experimental and fun.

Here is the song, "Moondance" sung by Michael Buble.

Here is an example of a costumer designer I admire Sarah Fuller

Another is Colleen Atwood, who has designed costumes for a multitude of major motion pictures such as Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, and Edward Scissorhands.

As far as makeup goes, I created a pinboard on Pinterest for inspirational makeup ideas. I have a screen shot of it here:

I've created an organizational chart here:

Here is my timeline:

I would like to be the Art Director for this piece. I'm also asking Karl Allsop to be the Director. I don't know who else would be fit for the other roles in the project so I won't try to pick them out.

Have a great  day,
 Lex

Moose Mainea Final!

I was assigned the state of Maine. I had to research different festivals and create a poster for one of the festivals. I chose Moose Mainea which takes place in Greenville, ME for an entire month. I focused on one specific event for my poster below.

Fast and Slow Final!

So for my Digital Design class we were given opposite words and mine happened to be "fast and slow." We had to create reciprocal designs for our opposite words. I went through a few revisions in order to get to this final. I made the shapes in Adobe Illustrator then threw it into Photoshop to add the highlights and shadows.

#7 Menagerie - D4M - Character Process

This is how I went about making the characters for the set.
First, I gathered and looked at reference photos because I need them. It makes drawing your characters that much easier when there's something else to look at. I then sketched out the characters in my sketchbook lightly, that way I can make multiple lines until I find the right one. I use tracing paper to finalize my drawing and make the lines darker and bolder with a marker. Then I transfer it onto my watercolor paper. I make sure I'm using a "waterproof" marker and not a "water resistant" marker so that it doesn't bleed when I paint on it.

I lay down some flat colors with my round tip brush. I go in with some more detail with a smaller brush. Also, when water coloring, a hair dryer is your best friend. It cuts drying time down and let’s you get back to painting faster. I then cut out the figures and added some supports to them when needed. The standing figure needed a base of clay and a pencil spine to stay up.

#6 - Menagerie - D4M - The Final

Ah, the final. This piece I created is a scene inspired by the 1930’s Old Hollywood era. I created a miniature set or scaled set for a movie. The set is designed and made up of found objects. I placed figures in the scene to give it a sense of dimensionality, however, these figures are 2D characters I illustrated for the set.

The main struggle I had in making this piece was finding the right objects and making them look like things they are not. Overall, it was a fun experience and I liked designing the set and characters, but the whole miniature thing I’m not so sure about. It’s definitely easier doing something on a small scale rather than full scale though for a short project like this one.
