Moose Mainea! - Festival Poster

In my traditional illustration class, we were given a state (I got Maine!) and we had to do some research and find a festival in this state. We then created a poster advertising for this festival. The real catch to this project is that we have to hand letter all the typography.  I've placed my sketches below.

Fast and Slow- Reciprocating Design

For my Digital Design class we each pulled an opposite out. I drew "Fast and Slow." I've posted my thumbnails, comps, and a quick color study, and then another idea for a color palette. More to come later!

#3 Menagerie Project - D4M - Color Palettes!

Here I've created a color palette for my 1930's glamour scene. I'm mainly focusing on building a scene from the 30's so I took inspiration from an existing room photograph. I have a color version and then a value study of the same palette. I have a few high key, neutral colors because this era is about the façade of riches, it almost has a gilded quality to it.

Here I have the Old West palette! I took my main source of inspiration from the landscapes around. This picture is of the Superstition Mountains in Phoenix, AZ. The desert is full of beautiful dirt, large rock formations, and different cacti.

#2 Menagerie - Design for Media

I've further developed my ideas for the Menagerie project.

I decided that creating 1 person from each decade was too broad and specifically in terms of fashion, etc. many different styles encompass each decade. With this in mind, I went further and chose to focus on 1930's Hollywood Glamour. I find the depiction of beauty in this era quite intriguing and dramatic. I'll be creating multiple characters (male and female) from this era and really focus on the aesthetics of this style. Again, hoping to create them in 3D.

Here I have a sketch of my good ol' cowboys. I'm really focusing on shape orientation for this piece. Obviously character designs still need to be ironed out and such. These characters will be quite fun to build in 3D.

#1 Menagerie Project- Design for Media

The Menagerie Project for my Design for Media class is very open. I need to create essentially a triptych with characters from the same world and style.

I'm toying with two concepts. The first is to continue developing some characters I used in my Storyboarding class last semester. They're cowboys with each a distinct shape characteristic to them. My initial thumbnails/sketches are below.

The other concept I have is to create a female character from different decades and showcase the iconic fashion/style each decade tends to have. I considered doing male and female characters, but male fashion doesn't change as drastically as female fashion did, and I really want to focus on drastic changes in the ideal sense of beauty throughout the decades particularly in fashion and outward appearances.

I've linked the sites to my two main influencing artists, Red Nose Studios and Skottie Young.

Ideally, I would like to create these characters in 3D. Realistically, it might come down to a time constraint and I'll just produce finished drawings of these characters. I'll have to create a timeline for myself in order to be as time efficient as possible.

Here are my initial thumbnails/sketches:

Arnold Classic Update!

So today all the designers met again for the last part of the charrette. We had about 2 hours to touch up our designs and then we had to present our changes to the client again. The client then met with Cynthia (from the MindMarket) and Jim (a faculty member at CCAD who helped us throughout the weekend) to decide on the finalists. Every designer will have their shirt designs printed at the event and will receive a letter of commendation from Arnold, which is very exciting! Here are my final designs that I submitted. I also received 2nd place in the contest.

Arnold Classic

Every year Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Lorimer put on the Arnold Classic and Arnold Sports Festival. This is an international and very prestigious event. Lo and behold, it's held in Columbus, Ohio! However, their ultimate goal is to have 8 Classics held around the world in a year. This year happens to be the 25th anniversary, which is very exciting for Arnold and Jim.  They've contacted CCAD and put together a charrette type competition for t-shirt designs for the Arnold Classic. The winner gets a photo with Arnold! Six other designers and I at CCAD worked for 10 hours today researching, sketching, and finalizing designs for the t-shirts. We then presented our designs to our wonderful client who was so gracious to feed us today!
Below are some of my sketches and then the final comps I presented to the client. Tomorrow we all go back with more finished and polished pieces for the final presentation.

It's the Beginning!

Hello Everybody!

It's the start of a new year and a new semester!

I'll tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Alexis Schuknecht. I'm from Michigan, but I currently live in Columbus, Ohio. I like sunflowers, books, and most candy. I also haven't met a cookie that I haven't liked.  I have a cat named Melon.

I'm a student at Columbus College of Art and Design. I aspire to work on movies, building props, designing sets, you name it I'll do it.

I'm looking forward to beginning this blog to keep track of all my crazy projects!

Have a super day!
