Scale Model of a Bungalow

This past semester, I took the 3-D illustration class with Hazelrig. Who is an amazing artist! I really wanted to challenge myself and do something a little outside my comfort zone and I thought this is the time to do it! 

I decided I wanted to make a scale model of a house. I knew that since I had no experience making one before that it might take me a little bit longer, but I had no idea what the scope of the project would need to be. Unbeknownst to me, Hazelrig used to make the most wonderful scale models, so he had high expectations for me. 

Needless to say, I struggled. I was using styrene plastic to make it and I found it incredibly difficult to work with. I should have used an easier material like foam core, at first. I ran into so many problems between cutting, the adhesives, the scale, even the floorplan and windows gave me trouble! I worked so hard on this project and when the due date came around...I wasn't done. I had walls that fell down, furniture that didn't quite look right, and for some reason I decided I wanted to paint the walls. I really wanted to decorate the interior, but I should have saved that for another time, because there was no way I could finish on time. 

I learned a lot from this failure of a project. I learned about understanding my own skills and how to make a realistic scope of work. I learned that it's okay to ask for help and there are special adhesives for certain kinds of plastic. I learned when you have plastic laser cut when you're in a pinch, it releases toxic fumes. I learned that super glue eventually will come off your skin (it won't be fun for a while, but it'll come off), but superglue will not come off your phone camera. 

During this whole project, I was happy. I was trying something new, I put my all into it. I tried every possible solution and had to think my way out of problems. I didn't end up with a good final product by any means, but the lessons I learned make up for it, I believe.
